Through the development of this task I learnt a range of
skills, including those in relation to lighting, using the camera and
post-production.
By listening to the track multiple times we were able to
envision what era we thought it was based around, the possible situation it was
written about and how the characters would look in relation to these factors.
We both felt the track had a more upbeat, rhythmic feel and this influenced the
way Philippa danced to it, basing the idea around American swing in the 40’s
and 50’s. We also attempted to show this in her costume slightly, the tie, hat
and shirt being purposely worn to represent what we assumed to be a possibly
wealthy male character.
By shooting the video outside I got to experience how natural
light can be an affecting factor, avoiding filming towards the sun for example.
The use of different reflectors also allowed for different effects, the silver
giving the female character a paler and slightly classier look whilst also
being more discreet than the gold one.
Evaluating on the camera shots used, we could have
incorporated more close ups rather than long or mid shots so as to emphasize
the lip syncing. Shooting from a wider range of angles would have allowed us to
add more cuts between different shots, thus incorporating the technique of
alternating between a large number quickly and giving the video a more faster
and jaunty pace, suiting the style we were aiming for.
In relation to the editing of the video we realised we could
have filmed some shots more due to issues with synchronising the music and
character and that would have allowed us to produce the whole video in sync to
the music rather than having a few seconds which aren’t. We also learnt from
editing the exchange of the hat in the video how post production can allow for
two shots which were separately filmed to be directly linked, also emphasizing
that Philippa was playing two characters.
